The Derby Dog waited a few days to let the "Rollergirl" article spread around a bit, and to see just what the tide brought back in. Not as much criticism as I expected, so I must've made something enjoyable. Of course, the article can go only so far into the truth until you get the facts from a closer source. Fortunately, some readers out there were able to get the Derby Dog back onto the right path. Thank You to those submitting their emails. Let's get the updated news onto the table.

Great article, but the only correction...The Windy City rollers...was the First team to knock someone into the third row, and onto the announcers table!

LOL Thanks for the update, Marc! Great uniforms by the way...

"Teri gave both thumbs up to the cheering crowd while being wheeled off the track. Her condition was unknown, but rumors of a dislocated jaw were being spread. A very bittersweet victory for Tucson. Tombstone Teri did in fact show up the next 2 days dressed up in uniform to support her team, but unfortunately unable to skate."

#RIP Tombstone Teri was kind enough to send us exactly what happened...

"I compacted c1 and c2 and was released from the hospital that night. I was allowed to skate in my team's intro for the game on Saturday. I'm just not allowed to to do any contact. The dislocated jaw was in reference to a game we played last November. Dislocated, finished the jam, emt relocated during the next 2 jams and i was put back in as a jammer."

There it is, straight from Tombstone Teri's own computer. Let's move on...

Hey, I'm a skater for the KC Roller Warriors. I liked reading your very detailed article about the Tucson tournament! All of the details about the players are awesome. One thing kinda bothered me a little . . . you said that Thunderella pounded her fists on the floor out of anger. I remember that happening (I saw it happen), and it was actually because she had hurt her knee. She finished the game on her injured knee and is still having problems with it. She is not the type to throw a fit. I just wanted to throw that out there . . . she is our All Star captain and an amazingly strong teammate. I have nothing but respect and love for her.

Thank You Connie! :) I'm sure Thunderella thanks you too...

I came across this post left in a yahoo message group concerning an opinion about the "Rollergirl" article...

interesting despite some gross errors and poor research.
official WFTDA rules are available at wftda.com

justin theway

I had to know just what he meant. Maybe he had some info worth being concerned about. I wrote him, and this is what he had to say...

In front of a crowd of over 800, the first ever Dust Devil Rollergirl Invitational commenced at Tucson Arizona’s own “Bladeworld” roller-hockey arena.

800?
we sold 1100 tickets for each day, and that is not
counting the 350+ skaters, refs and officials that got
in for free.
and you have an incorrect score
houston actually beat assination city 24 to 23
now why the official WFTDA rules are a work in
progress perhaps if you researched them you would
understand why both jammers were in the penalty box.
the rules are available at www.wftda.com the wftda
is aware of problems with the rules, and they are
working on it. but to blame the referees is flat out
incorrect. they enforced the rules in that situation
as the are published.

Thank you for the updated info... literally. This is my favorite letter of all...

The article's data containing the Houston VS Assassination score actually CAME from the "TucsonRollerDerby" website, as of February 27th. I printed the paper out on that very date and what I read is what made it to the article. The website has been changed since then.

If blaming the referees is wrong... stop giving us reasons to. Understood, the referee must enforce every rule with whatever consequence comes with breaking it; however, it's also the referee's job to find the right consequence for the given situation.

Honestly, it doesn't matter what the book says, common sense can tell you placing both jammers into the box and starting the jam is ridiculous. Even Lou Sanchez, a veteran who's been skating Roller Derby before the 50's, had NEVER once seen a time when at least 1 jammer was not on the track. He honestly thought I was kidding him!

Can you honestly tell anyone that there wasn't a better solution for that particular situation? I empathize with you about the stress of being a ref... I've been one before. Don't defend something that you know is senseless.

Well they "are" banked track and probly sustain more head injuries...
forgive their errors justin... forgive them...

Right... Right. Hilarious. Glad somebody found that funny... It's almost cute to make fun of a sport that you're the offspring of. Do you stab your mother in the back with those same words?

ATTENTION: This is what the old-schoolers see when people represent "Rollergirls." A bunch of young, immature, uneducated know-it-alls (male and female alike) who'll talk first and think second. If these descriptions don't apply to you, then you need to speak up and drown out these idiots, because they're making you look bad.

Not once did we insult any "Rollergirls" in the article, and we had no reasons or intent to. Many of us are happy that young people have taken interest in this sport. This attack on banked-track derby skaters is uncalled for. First, try to show some respect... then try to show some tact. It's the least you can do.
